Jets confirm Nick T sacking
10 October 2006 | 11:38 - AAP
Newcastle United Jets have confirmed the sacking of Nick Theodorakopoulos as coach of the struggling A-League club.
Chief executive George Liolio and football director Remo Nogarotto officially announced Theodorakopoulos' release at a press conference, with assistant Gary van Egmond to take over as caretaker coach for at least the next two weeks.
Newcastle reached the inaugural A-League finals series under Englishman Richard Money last season, but sit bottom of the league with just three draws and no wins from its opening seven games of 2006-07.
Including the Pre-Season Cup, Newcastle has not won in 13 games, with the club beset by injury, suspensions and player recruitment problems in recent months.
Theodorakopoulos is the first coaching casualty of the season, with former Socceroos boss Frank Farina and Bankstown City coach Peter Tsekenis, a former Olyroo, linked to the Jets position.
Farina said he would be interested in taking over an A-League club if approached.
"If the situation is right, of course, but I'm not talking about Newcastle, I'm just saying if something good came up which was the right move from me I'd definitely be interested," Farina told Sky News.
The Jets play fellow strugglers New Zealand Knights at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday.
